Corn, Popcorn (Zea mays)

Evidence of popcorn from 3600 BCE was found in New Mexico and even earlier evidence dating to perhaps as early as 4700 BCE was found in Peru. It has a hard exterior shell and a soft starchy center. Other types of dried corn may burst open slightly when heated, but popcorn is unique in its taste and popping ability.
