Horseradish (Amoracia rusticiana)
Horseradish is a root vegetable known for its pungent taste and odour. Its distinctive taste is used to flavour many dishes and it has several uses in herbal medicine. It has long been valued for its medicinal properties and is still popular with natural therapists to help relieve respiratory congestion.
Horseradish, Armoracia rusticana got its common name in 16th century England. The word “horse” meant “coarse” at the time. The word “radish” is Latin for “root”.
Supplied as horseradish roots x 2
Planting
Horseradish is usually grown by planting small root pieces (also known as horseradish sets) directly into the ground soil. Root pieces can be planted at a 45-degree angle roughly 10cm deep. Space them around 40cm apart, or plant horseradish plants or crowns just like any other plant planting.
Keep your horseradish planting site at least 1m away from other plants to leave enough room for the roots to develop without interfering with your other crops. If you are worried about horseradish taking over your garden, growing it in a large container will be a good option for you.
